SMUBE Administration department has come a long way since its establishment in 2004. It started out as a support department liaising for both backstage, emcees and broadcast operations. Besides that, the department is in charge of all administrative matters pertaining to the club.
The Finance Department ensures the efficient flow of financial resources in SMUBE. The department are involved in areas such as budgeting for operation needs, managing of existing assets and managing of financial resources.
Since its inception, the Legal team sets out to play two important roles in SMU Broadcast & Entertainment - the roles of an advisor and a negotiator.The imperative responsibility of the legal department is to keep the club and its radio station within legal boundaries and in compliance with institutional constraints. Thus, the legal team constantly avails itself to provide advice to directors and other members of BE. In addition, the department makes a conscious effort to educate the club on essential legal matters, such as copyrights issues. On behalf of SMU Campus Radio, the team negotiates with relevant licensing boards for new license agreements with better terms and more favourable licensing fees. Therefore, it is essential that members of the department establish and maintain good working relationships with liaison officers in the licensing boards. Through the sending of greeting cards, emails and even occasional phone calls, the team has managed to build good rapport with these key stakeholders and will continue to do so in the coming year. Apart from fulfilling our responsibilities, the team creates a friendly environment for its members by having occasional internal outings and implementing fun-filled training methods.
The Marketing Department is responsible for the overall branding and image of SMUBE, Campus Radio all major projects that SMUBE undertakes. All these are done through regular, planned marketing and branding efforts will be undertaken in order to maintain a desired and consistent branding image of SMUBE, as well as Campus Radio. The department is also tasked with the responsibilty of the overall advertising and promotions for all aspects of SMUBE operations. This includes designing of all publicity materials, as well as maintenance of the SMUBE club website, which serves as a main channel for us to reach out to SMU. Market research is done for the purpose of decision-making and analysis of campaign results to monitor the effectiveness of marketing execution.To help our members, the department also provide training in the use of design software such as Photoshop and fundamental training in designing.
Branched out in 2006 as a standalone department from the original Administration Department, the PR and Sponsorship Department concentrates on managing the image of SMUBE in the eyes of our internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, the department is also tasked with the mission of liaising with SMUBE current corporate partners and securing new corporate partners. Through doing so, the PR department has provided our members with opportunities to hone their interpersonal communication skills and experience realistic on-the-job PR experiences.
The Training and Development Department aims to add value to SMUBE members by facilitating effective training programmes designed to equip members with useful skills and know-how relevant to SMUBE's activities. In addition, it also adds value to BE as a whole by providing a platform for improving the training programmes conducted within the club and by helping the club to progress in terms of efficiency and professionalism in a systematic way. Another important task of the department is the Integrated Training Programme which has been redeveloped since its first run in August 2004 to provide better integration of new members into the club's operations and culture and to provide more hands on experience to the incoming freshmen.
As our club grows bigger, the Welfare and Recruitment Department becomes significantly more important. With such a big club like ours, it is easy to lose the bonds amongst the members, so the primary function of the department is to bring together the people, beyond the events that we help out at. The other primary function of the department is to run recruitment exercises to attract motivated and responsible members to the club. SMUBE's operations are growing at a very fast rate and more help would be needed to manage the various departments. Hence, the Recruitment wing is looking towards pooling in more SMU students to join our family. With such a big club like ours, we have to work harder in keeping strong bonds within the club. This is achieved through informal gatherings or activities which the team has lined up for all our members.
